What’s New for the Adult Congenital Heart Clinic

Season: Winter 2009
Submitted By: Cheryl Tarr, RN, BSN
Nurse Clinician
Calgary Adult Congenital Heart Clinic

Many adult congenital heart patients, especially those with complex lesions have a very high rate of developing heart rhythm disorders in adulthood. It is important to have a specialist with in depth knowledge of both congenital heart disease and heart rhythm disorders to provide expert diagnosis and management.

In the fall of 2008 the Calgary Adult Congenital Heart Clinic welcomed Dr. Robin Clegg. Dr. Clegg is a pediatric cardiologist who specializes in heart rhythm disorders in childhood as well as heart rhythm disorders in adults with congenital heart disease. She is now seeing patients from the Calgary Adult Congenital Heart Clinic in consult at the request of our clinic cardiologists and she is able to provide advice on medical management as well as offering radiofrequency ablation to treat some rhythm disorders.

In October 2009 the Libin Institute of Calgary opened a new electrophysiology lab at the Foothills Medical Centre. The new lab will benefit from a significant technological upgrade for both diagnostic and treatment procedures. The new technology provided by this lab will result in improved success rates for radiofrequency ablation as well as a decrease in complications. In the coming months Dr. Clegg will be booking some of our adult congenital heart patients for ablation procedures right here in Calgary.
